The most westerly lighthouse in Europe, it has a treacherous surrounding area and one of the hardest helicopter pads to land on due to the updrafts that can suddenly occur and knock the helicopter off course

Very few people actually see the lighthouse as it's obscured from the mainland by the peak on the island. In the closing scenes of the movie 'Ryan's Daughter' the island can be seen in the background as Robert Mitchum and Sarah Miles wait for the bus to take them away. I took the pictures below in 2009 with the assistance of Capt. Pete Hodges flying the Irish Helicopters Eurocpter EC 135. I had the door open for the duration of the photo shoot. Never seen the sea so flat calm as it was that day. I heard there were minke whales off the landing stage at the Tearaght |
